Handmade
“The knife is not just an extension of your body but an extension of your being - who you are”
Inspired of the idea of tools becoming extensions of the users hands and body. Handmade is an investigation into 3D Body Scanning, and an attempt to better understand form fit products.
Kitchen tools were used for this investigation due to the vast amount of different tools and tasks.
Preliminary 3D scans of various kitchen tasks were taken to analyze and model forms around.
I then developed concepts of different kitchen tools exploring functional and conceptual redesigns.
Based on those tasks various shape templates were derived from the scans of specific areas within the hand. Those areas include the thumb, digits, knuckles, outer hand, palm, and wrist.
3D printing of shape templates was then done for testing and refinement, in order to fit the hand while considering motion.
In order to put this information into the hands of the user, a simple interface was developed to allow the user to measure given landmarks of a particular area, and then provide 3D files calculated to fit those areas.
Based on the earlier concepts a series of simple kitchen tools were derived from the library of templates. These tools were used for the purpose of testing and to show and inspire applications for this technology.
The goal was for these tools to be form fit specific to the user and in fact be extensions of the user’s body.
